Plot summary
In 1931, Angelo "Snaps" Provolone has turned his gang into household staff and is trying to keep a promise to his dying father Eduardo: he will quit crime. He prepares a meeting with bankers, hoping a large donation wins him a seat on their board and an honest job. His accountant, Anthony Rossano, arrives demanding a raise and announcing that he plans to propose to Lisa, Snaps' daughter, with $50,000 in jewels he took by cooking the books. Lisa, the only child of Snaps and Sofia, tells her parents she is pregnant and names Oscar, the family's former chauffeur, as the father. Lieutenant Toomey and the rival Vendetti both keep watch on the mansion.

- Landis's first choice for the lead role of Angelo 'Snaps' Provolone was Al Pacino, who was to be paid $2 million but was then offered $3 million to appear in Dick Tracy; Landis said Oscar would have been a much better movie with him.
- Before production ended, Landis invited Jonathan Lynn, then casting for My Cousin Vinny, onto the set; seeing Marisa Tomei in a scene convinced them they had their actress, and the following year she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
- At a preview of Oscar, which starred Sylvester Stallone, someone wrote on the card: 'Why didn't he take his shirt off and kill anybody?'
