Plot summary
Barbie tells her little sister Kelly, who cannot get through a ballet solo, a story set in 1890s Germany. Clara lives with her stern grandfather Drosselmeyer and her brother Tommy. On Christmas Eve their aunt Elizabeth brings toys, among them a nutcracker for Clara; Tommy grabs at it and damages its arm. Clara repairs the nutcracker and drifts off beside the tree. At midnight the Nutcracker comes to life and fights mice commanded by the Mouse King, who casts a spell that shrinks Clara to his size. She and the Nutcracker flee, and he tells her the Mouse King changed him too. The owl on the clock sends them toward the Sugarplum Princess, the only one who can undo both spells, and hands Clara a locket that will carry her home.

- One animator's job was dedicated to animating the movement of Barbie's hair: it was kept down rather than braided like Princess Fiona in Shrek, and a hair rig was built so it would not intersect her body. Co-producer Jennifer Twiner McCarron said the hair was like a separate character.
- Barbie in the Nutcracker was the first Barbie movie made with computer-generated imagery, and the character's first film since the 1987 TV specials Barbie and the Rockers: Out of This World and Barbie and the Sensations: Rockin' Back to Earth.
- The film was animated over four months by 22 artists at Mainframe Entertainment using Softimage and Maya. Non-human characters were keyframed while the humans were motion-captured, and the animators spent a week with New York City Ballet at Acclaim Motion Capture Studio in Long Island, taking three days to capture the dancers.
- Mattel wanted a soft, stylized look for Barbie and did not want her to appear or move like a doll as she had in Toy Story 2; co-producer Jennifer Twiner McCarron said the team ran lighting and hair shader tests and used Eddie, a softer add-on that gets around blurriness.
