Plot summary
Jackie Washington, a 1960s and 1970s R&B singer, has spent years out of the spotlight. She organizes a comeback concert and lets British documentarian Edward Whatsett St. John record the preparations. His camera captures the people around her: her daughters Antandra Washington and Shaniqua Summers Wells, her grandson Wilson Wells, her sister Ethyl Washington Rue Owens, and her childhood friend Snookie Tate. Her former manager Marvin Pritz and her play mama, Miss Krumes, also appear. A host, Pammy Dunbar, and a deaf rehearsal pianist, Perry, are part of the event. Others are present, including her ex-husband Milkman Summers, a retired pimp named Cadillac Johnson, and Lola Molina. Jackie rehearses for the show.
