Plot summary
A pregnant woman, Alice Fleming, reaches a workhouse and dies after giving birth to a son. The beadle, Mr. Bumble, names the boy Oliver Twist. One day Oliver asks for more gruel on behalf of another hungry orphan and is punished by being apprenticed to an undertaker, Mr. Sowerberry, where he stands silent at children's funerals. After the older apprentice Noah Claypole insults Oliver's mother and Oliver attacks him, Sowerberry sides with Noah and decides to send the boy back. Oliver runs away instead, walking seven days to London, where the pickpocket Jack Dawkins, known as the Artful Dodger, brings him to Fagin, a criminal who teaches boys to steal. Oliver also meets Fagin's brutal associate Bill Sikes and Sikes's lover Nancy.
