Plot summary
Jack Scanlan, a union leader, goes back to work after a heart attack. His son Frank plans a welcome back surprise party, and the shock of it kills Jack. His large family comes together for the funeral, where years of emotional baggage surface. Eldest son Johnny, a tree surgeon, wants a more adventurous life; his brother Frank, a labor leader, measures himself against his father's expectations. Their sister Terry is a dancer, and her ex-husband Boyd and would-be suitor Peter, an embalmer, are both part of the gathering. Younger sister Nora is a nun based in Latin America, and Mary is the widowed matriarch. Cassie Slocombe, a woman the family does not recognize, arrives at the funeral, and whether she was Jack's mistress is unclear.
