Plot summary
A toymaker in Europe long ago, Nicholas Claus gives more toys away than he sells. His landlord, Mr. Minch, evicts him and his wife Gretchen and takes her wedding ring as payment. Penniless, the couple carry their remaining toys toward the children at Angel's Island Orphanage, where Nicholas grew up making toys for the other orphans. A storm at sea leaves them at the North Pole, among elves, including the wizardly Nostros, his son Clement, and the elf girl Aurora. Nostros owes Nicholas a wish after Nicholas saves Clement's life, and Nicholas asks to deliver toys to every child in the world on Christmas. Nostros calls the wish impossible and warns it would destroy the elves' magic, but it cannot be taken back, and Nicholas and Gretchen begin recruiting elves to build a toy factory.
