Plot summary
Thirteen-year-old Maria Merryweather is left orphaned by her father's death, and she and her governess, Miss Heliotrope, leave London for Moonacre Manor, where her estranged uncle Sir Benjamin Merryweather lives. A book from her father, The Ancient Chronicles of Moonacre Valley, tells of the first Moon Princess, the pearls she received from the moon, and the greed that seized the Merryweathers and the de Noirs when she revealed them. Sir Benjamin warns Maria of bandits and tells her that the forest and the de Noirs are forbidden to her. Riding with her uncle, Maria hears a cry and slips into the forest, where bandits surround her and a boy named Robin de Noir stands among them.
