Plot summary
In 1954, six strangers are welcomed at a secluded New England mansion by Wadsworth, the butler, and Yvette, the maid. Each takes a pseudonym: Colonel Mustard, Mrs. White, Mrs. Peacock, Mr. Green, Professor Plum and Miss Scarlet. At dinner they learn that every one of them has a connection to the United States government, and a seventh guest, Mr. Boddy, joins them. Wadsworth tells them Boddy has been blackmailing each of them by threatening to expose their secrets, and that police officers are on their way to arrest Boddy. Wadsworth says Boddy had been blackmailing him too. Boddy suggests the guests kill Wadsworth and gives each a weapon: a candlestick, rope, a lead pipe, a wrench, a revolver and a dagger. The lights go out and a shot is fired.

- On its original release, the film was shown with three different endings, with each theater screening only one, so different audiences saw different solutions.
- Carrie Fisher, originally cast as Miss Scarlet, dropped out to enter treatment for drug and alcohol addiction, triggering a chain of recastings that moved Lesley Ann Warren from Mrs. White to Miss Scarlet and brought in Madeline Kahn as Mrs. White.
- Playwright Tom Stoppard spent a year drafting the screenplay before giving up and returning the money he had already been paid for it.
- The mansion used for the film's exterior shots later burned down in a real fire decades after production, though it has since been rebuilt.
