Biography

Thomas Kretschmann is a German actor who has worked across European and American cinema, often cast as military officers from history or fiction. Born in Dessau, he took up acting at 25 and appeared in numerous European films and television series, among them Westler. In 1991 he earned a Max Ophüls Festival award as best young actor for Der Mitwisser, and his first full-length feature came with Stalingrad (1993). International attention followed for his role as Alfredo Grossi in The Stendhal Syndrome. Hollywood took note when he played Hauptmann Wilm Hosenfeld in The Pianist (2002). Later films include Downfall, King Kong (2005), Valkyrie (2008), Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), Immortal, and Cars 2 (2011), where he voiced Professor Z. He was Baron Wolfgang von Strucker in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). His television work includes 24 and The River, and he has received two Deutscher Fernsehpreis nominations, plus European Film Award and Nika Award nominations.

    Before Tom Cruise was cast, Kretschmann was considered to play Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg in Valkyrie, but he ended up playing Major Otto Ernst Remer instead.
