Plot summary
Most of Earth's landmass lies under water after sea levels rose, and two small continents remain, at war with each other. Sentinel is a sea outpost between them, and four soldiers man it: Hendrichs, who leads the squad; the corporal, Cassidy; Baines, who keeps the machinery running; and Sullivan, who fishes and cooks. They signed on for two years. Relief is three months late. A powerful storm costs Sullivan his catch, and Baines is angry about it; Sullivan answers by complaining about the condition of the outpost. A ship then appears on radar, and it does not answer Cassidy's attempts to reach it by radio. Hendrichs sends Sullivan across to look at it.

- The film's sea outpost was modeled on the real Maunsell Forts off the coast of Kent in south-east England. Those forts were several towers originally linked by bridges, but the outpost on screen is a single tower based on one of the real ones.
