Plot summary
Simon Templar is a master thief who signs his work with a card naming him The Saint. He interferes with a deal in which terrorists swap gold for bombs, seizes most of the gold, and leaves his calling card behind. A shadowy figure tells a banker, Arnold Valecross, to take a large sum of foreign aid destined for Nigeria. Templar hears of the stolen money and sets out to bring it back. The banker's employer responds by holding Valecross's daughter Zoe, and Templar moves to free her. Patricia Holm, his friend, and Doyle, an associate, join the effort, while the FBI, under Inspector Fernack, chases Templar.

- The Saint was Roger Moore's final film appearance; it was dedicated to his memory and he died two months before its release. Moore had played Simon Templar in the 1960s TV series of the same title.
- The film started life as a 2013 television pilot for a proposed Saint series that was not picked up, so it was never intended for release. It eventually came out direct-to-video in 2017, in tribute to Roger Moore following his death.
- When the pilot was extended into a film, Ernie Barbarash directed the new material around Rayner's and Dushku's limited availability: Rayner kept the beard he wore on Tyrant, and Templar's scenes with Holm were written as Skype calls so the two actors never had to be free on the same day.
- Patricia Holm, a regular presence in the Saint novels from the 1920s through the early 1940s, has appeared in only one other production besides this one: the 1943 film The Saint Meets the Tiger.
- Ian Ogilvy's part was greatly expanded for the reworked film, with new flashbacks built to establish his backstory, and Roger Moore recorded fresh dialogue to replace lines that no longer fitted the changed plot.
