Plot summary
On a rainy night in 1933, Gilda Bessé turns up at the Cambridge room of Guy Malyon, an Irish scholarship student, after quarreling with one of the dons, and he lets her stay out of the storm. They become lovers, but Gilda leaves England, and the two part. Years later, a letter from her brings Guy to Paris, where she works as a photographer and lives with Mia, a Spanish-born nursing student and model. The three share the apartment, and Gilda drops the lover she has when Guy moves in. With the Spanish Civil War under way, Mia wants to help her native country and Guy, a longtime supporter of the Spanish Republic, is determined to join the fight. Gilda, who has no interest in politics, pleads with them to ignore it.
