Plot summary
The Trans-Siberian Railway carries Roy and Jessie, an American couple, home from a Christian mission in China. They board in Beijing bound for Moscow. Roy, who loves locomotives, quickly makes friends with their cabin mates: Carlos, a Spaniard, and Abby, his girlfriend from Seattle. Jessie, an aspiring photographer, is less trusting. Carlos shows Jessie the matryoshka dolls he has as souvenirs. At Irkutsk, Roy leaves the train to inspect other locomotives in the yard and is left behind. Jessie chooses to wait for him at the following stop, and Carlos and Abby remain with her. In Ilanskaya, Jessie spots a doll much like Carlos's. Abby grows upset when Jessie brings it up.
