Plot summary
In 1572 France, Catholics and Huguenots fight for political control. King Charles IX rules, and his mother, Catherine de Médicis, wields the real authority. The Catholic party follows Duke Henri de Guise, the Protestant faction Admiral Gaspard de Coligny. Wanting to appease Pope Gregory XIII and Spain as well as the Protestant states, and to calm the rivalries inside the kingdom, Catherine offers her daughter Marguerite de Valois in marriage to the Huguenot Henri de Bourbon, King of Navarre. Marguerite does not love Henri. She begins an affair with the Protestant soldier La Môle, who comes from a well-to-do family.

- For the North American release, Miramax cut fifteen minutes from Patrice Chéreau's version of La Reine Margot and reinserted a deleted scene of Margot and La Môle wrapped in a red cloak. Miramax also replaced the French poster showing a blood-spattered Margot for the lovers' red-cloak image.
- The soundtrack was composed by Sarajevo-born Goran Bregović, whose melodies are heavily influenced by Balkan folk music. Bregović also refurbished some of his own earlier material from his days as frontman of the Yugoslav rock band Bijelo dugme.
- In the film the king and his brothers wear their hair long, a look owed more to the fashion of the time and to stars such as Kurt Cobain, who died the same year, than to historical reality.
