Plot summary
In November 1942, three months into the Battle of Stalingrad, a handful of Russian troops shelters in a large apartment block beside the Volga. Five of them, Polyakov, Chvanov, Nikiforov, Sergey and Captain Gromov, come upon Katya, a girl whose family was killed and who is living alone in the building, and over the days that follow they grow fond of her. On the German side, Hauptmann Kahn, a decorated officer, becomes attached to Masha, a Russian woman who calls to mind his late wife. Oberstleutnant Henze arrives to take charge and reprimands Kahn over that bond and over his failure to clear the Russian soldiers out.

- For a major late scene, the filmmakers fielded Panzer tanks modeled on the German Mk.IV G/H, a version that did not enter service until roughly a year after the battle, an oversight by the historical advisors and production team.
