Plot summary
Yossi Ghinsberg, an Israeli backpacker in La Paz, Bolivia, meets Karl Ruprechter, an Austrian stranger who says he knows a hidden indigenous tribe in the jungle and offers to take him there. Yossi persuades his friends Kevin Gale, an American photographer, and Marcus Stamm, a Swiss teacher, to join the trip. The four hike into the rainforest, stop at a village Karl knows, and push on as supplies run low. Marcus's feet break down into bloody sores, and his friends lose patience with him. Karl wants to leave the three and go for help, but Kevin proposes a raft downriver instead, and the four are divided over how to continue.
