Plot summary
At a resort in the seaside country of Li Tolqa, the novelist James Foster and his wife Em are on vacation while a local festival takes place, and their marriage is strained. Gabi, a fan of the one novel James has published, invites them to dinner with her husband Alban, and the next day the four drive into the countryside, though visitors are warned to stay on the resort grounds. At a beach Gabi approaches James when he steps away. After a day of sunbathing and cooking, they drive back drunk; the car's lights flicker, and James hits a local man, who dies. Gabi says they cannot call the police. James is arrested the next day. For foreign nationals the law allows a copy of the guilty to be made and killed in his place.
