Plot summary

King Ahasuerus of Persia celebrates his empire with a banquet in Shushan, and when Queen Vashti will not come to be shown to his guests, he has her removed and orders a search for a new queen. Guards take young women from their homes across the kingdom and bring them to the palace. Hadassah, a Jewish girl who lives in Shushan with her cousin and guardian Mordecai, is captured even though he tries to hide her. Mordecai has her take the name Esther, meaning hidden, and she is placed in the harem in the care of Haggai, the royal eunuch who keeps it. Haman, another adviser to the king, gains power and favor, and when Mordecai will not bow to him, Haman begins to seek revenge.
