Plot summary
In June 1943, Lieutenant-Commander Randall Sullivan takes the USS Swordfish to sea, and Admiral Kentz tells him that Chief of the Boat Nathan Travers is a man he could learn from. Travers' wife Rachel asks him to come home safely. Two months out, the crew runs general quarters drills, and executive officer Teddy Goodman falls ill; the doctor calls it meningitis, highly contagious and sometimes fatal. Sullivan also has a rash, which the crew does not know about. Sent to investigate the sinking of a British merchant vessel, the Swordfish is damaged and its survivors are pulled from the water as prisoners aboard Jonas Herdt's U-boat 429.
