Plot summary
Two marriages come apart in Wellington. Simon, who lives comfortably with his wife Pam and their two children, has grown tired of the absence of sex at home, and he is attracted to Katrien, a cellist and a friend of Pam. Katrien has followed her husband Klaus to New Zealand to revive their relationship, and that marriage collapses instead, leaving her lonely and open to Simon's attention. Neither of them begins an affair straight away. Meanwhile, several of the wives propose that the husbands should meet regularly as an encounter group, and at least one wife makes her husband's return to the family house a condition of it.
