A first
Sean Connery was the first actor to play James Bond on screen, originating the role in Dr. No in 1962 and going on to star in seven Bond films.
Behind the award
Connery received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Untouchables, released in 1987. He was the first Scottish actor to take home a major Oscar.
Behind the camera
Connery directed and presented the 1967 documentary The Bowler and the Bunnet, which described the Fairfield Experiment in industrial relations at a Glasgow shipbuilding company.
A role that slipped away
That year, Connery was asked to play Daddy Warbucks in Annie. He took voice lessons for the John Huston musical, but in the end he turned the part down.
First role
In April 1957, Rakoff was disappointed by Jack Palance, so he gave Connery a first leading role. He cast him as Mountain McLintock in the BBC Television production of Requiem for a Heavyweight.
