Plot summary

Barley Scott-Blair runs a British publishing house and travels to Moscow in the autumn of 1987. At a writers' retreat outside the city he says the standoff with the West may be ending, and a man named Dante makes him promise to act rightly if the chance ever comes. Months later a young Soviet, Katya Orlova, leaves a manuscript for Barley with another publisher, who reads it and passes it to the British government. The pages set out the Soviet Union's ability to wage nuclear war, and investigators identify Dante as the physicist Yakov Efraimovich Saveleyev. Officers of British intelligence find Barley at his holiday flat in Lisbon and question him about Katya. The agent Ned gives him rudimentary training, and Barley goes back to the Soviet Union to find Dante.
