Plot summary
Britain's Secret Intelligence Service loses radio contact with its station in Jamaica after its chief, John Strangways, and his secretary vanish; Strangways had been helping the CIA trace signals that jammed rocket launches from Cape Canaveral. M sends James Bond, agent 007, to find out what happened. In London, before flying out, Bond wins a hand of chemin de fer against Sylvia Trench at a gambling club. In Jamaica a driver sent to meet him turns violent, and the man kills himself with a cyanide-laced cigarette. Bond asks to meet the people who saw Strangways last, among them the geologist Professor Dent. CIA agent Felix Leiter explains that Quarrel had been working with him and Strangways to find the source of the jamming. The trail points to Crab Key, an island controlled by a man named Dr. No.

- The aquarium in Dr. No's apartment was a rear-projection screen: the production had so little money that the only stock footage it could buy was of goldfish-sized fish, so the image was blown up and a line about magnification was put into Bond's dialogue.
- Goya's Portrait of the Duke of Wellington, which Bond is amazed to see at Dr. No's dinner table, had been stolen from the National Gallery in London by a 60-year-old amateur thief just before filming began; Ken Adam obtained a slide and painted the copy over a weekend.
- The tarantula crawling over Bond was filmed on stuntman Bob Simmons, who described it as the most frightening stunt he had ever performed, and a planned scene of Honey tied down and attacked by crabs became a drowning instead because the crabs, sent frozen from the Caribbean, moved little during filming.
- For Bond's antagonist Dr. No, Ian Fleming wanted his friend Noël Coward, and Coward answered the invitation with "No! No! No!"
- Several actors passed on James Bond first: Cary Grant would be committed to only one feature film, James Mason only wanted to do two, Richard Johnson turned it down because he already had a contract with MGM, and Patrick McGoohan refused on moral grounds as a Catholic.
- During the car chase scene Connery insisted on doing a stunt himself, driving under a construction crane with only inches to spare, which nearly killed him.
- The Vatican condemned Dr. No as "a dangerous mixture of violence, vulgarity, sadism and sex", while the Kremlin stated that Bond was the personification of capitalist evil; both controversies helped increase public awareness of the film and cinema attendance.
- The scene of Andress emerging from the water in a bikini topped Channel 4's 2003 list of the hundred sexiest scenes of film history, and the bikini itself was sold at auction in 2001 for $61,500.
