Plot summary
John Steed, an agent of the British Ministry, and Dr. Emma Peel, a meteorologist, are summoned to the Ministry. Its spymaster, Mother, tells them that someone sabotaged Prospero, a project built to influence the weather, and that Peel is the suspect. She denies it, so she is sent to work with Steed and find the person responsible. Father, who is Mother's second-in-command, holds that Peel suffers from dissociative identity disorder. The two call on Sir August de Wynter, a former Ministry scientist who shares Peel's love of weather. A lead takes them to Wonderland Weather, a business whose machine creates heat or rain, and to a secret organization whose members wear teddy bear suits to hide their identities.

- The rock band Radiohead recorded a version of their song "Man of War" for The Avengers soundtrack, but abandoned it after a failed studio session.
- Warner Bros. cut The Avengers down after test screenings, reducing the 115-minute film to 89 minutes and sacrificing much of its coherence and continuity.
- The original cut of The Avengers has yet to surface, and Warner Bros. has no plans to release a director's cut or special edition, even though director Jeremiah Chechik offered to recut the film for free.
- Composer Michael Kamen originally scored The Avengers and included the original television theme, but the radical editing left him unable to re-score the film, so he dropped out; Joel McNeely scored the recut version.
- Mel Gibson was an early choice to play John Steed because he had a contract with producer Jerry Weintraub, but director Jeremiah Chechik was instrumental in getting Ralph Fiennes the part, which Fiennes accepted while filming The English Patient.
- Before Uma Thurman was cast as Emma Peel, both Emma Thompson and Nicole Kidman were considered for the role.
- Diana Rigg was offered a role in The Avengers but turned the project down because she felt it would invite unfair comparisons to Uma Thurman's take on the role.
