Honor Blackman
Biography
Honor Blackman was an English actress and singer born in London in 1925. She began drama training in 1940 and attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, then moved into live theater, where she understudied in The Guinea Pig and appeared in The Blind Goddess. Her first film role had no dialogue, in Fame Is the Spur (1947), and she went on to appear in the Titanic story A Night to Remember (1958), the Western Shalako (1968), and as Hera in Jason and the Argonauts (1963). Judo training helped her create Cathy Gale in The Avengers from 1962 to 1964, a part that led to her casting as Pussy Galore in Goldfinger (1964). She later played Laura West in The Upper Hand from 1990 to 1996 and made her final feature appearance in Cockneys vs Zombies (2012). On stage she appeared in The Sound of Music, toured in My Fair Lady, and played Fraulein Schneider in Cabaret.

Getting ready for a role
In the 1960s, Blackman trained in judo at the Budokwai dojo. That training aided her in getting ready to play Cathy Gale on the British TV show The Avengers and Pussy Galore in Goldfinger.
Big break
Albert R. Broccoli said Honor Blackman won the Bond film role opposite Sean Connery because of her success in The Avengers. He said the Brits would love her and the Yanks would like her, a perfect combination.

Honor Blackman's film debut came in Fame Is the Spur, released in 1947, where she played a part that had no speaking lines.
Beyond film
Blackman's recording of "Kinky Boots" with Patrick Macnee failed to chart in 1964 but became a surprise hit in 1990, reaching number five after BBC Radio 1 played it heavily.
A first
Blackman took the stage in a 1981 London revival of The Sound of Music, playing opposite Petula Clark. That production earned rave reviews and, for its era, the biggest advance sale in British theater history.
