Plot summary
Federal Marshal William T. O'Niel begins a tour of duty at Con-Am 27, a titanium ore mining outpost that the company Con-Amalgamated runs on Io, a moon of Jupiter. Gravity is one-sixth of Earth's, the air cannot be breathed, suits hold limited air, and shifts are long, though they pay large bonuses. Mark Sheppard, the general manager, says productivity has broken every record since he took charge. O'Niel's wife Carol believes their son Paul cannot be raised on Io, and she takes him to a station above Jupiter to arrange passage to Earth. Cane, a miner, steps into an elevator without his suit and dies, and Tarlow dies of decompression during a psychotic attack. O'Niel investigates, with reluctant help from Dr. Lazarus.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Stephen Goldblatt received sole credit as cinematographer but has said he was hired only because of union requirements: Hyams always intended to do the job himself and could use him as a scapegoat if the Introvision photography went wrong. Angered by the deception, Goldblatt stayed rather than risk a career with one feature credit.
- Outland was the first film to use Introvision, a front-projection technique that combined foreground, mid-ground and background elements directly in the camera instead of with bluescreen matting, letting actors appear to walk convincingly through miniature sets of the mining colony.
