Plot summary
King Arthur has won his wars and now devotes his reign to justice and peace, and to thoughts of marriage. Malagant, once a Knight of the Round Table, wants the throne of Camelot for himself and raids the villages of Lyonesse under the claim of upholding the law. Guinevere, who rules Lyonesse after her father's death, agrees to marry Arthur for the protection his crown offers. Lancelot is a vagabond swordsman who earns his way by dueling in small villages, a man who says he does not care whether he lives or dies. On the road to Camelot, Malagant's men ambush Guinevere's carriage, and Lancelot happens upon the attack and spoils it. He falls for her at once; she keeps to her duty and her coming marriage.

- Maurice Jarre was hired to score the original three-hour cut but declined, having only four weeks to write 90 minutes of music. Jerry Goldsmith replaced him at the last minute and had just three and a half days to record the entire score.
- The original soundtrack release was so short that bootleg versions began circulating in 2000. La-La Land Records later put out a limited 2-CD edition of 5,000 copies in 2011 with the complete score.
