Plot summary
Hawletts hauls gravel, and its drivers must complete twelve loads a day over bad roads or lose their jobs; the fastest makes eighteen. Tom Yately, newly hired to truck 13, says he has been abroad. The depot mechanic takes him out on a trial run, and he swerves to avoid two Hawletts trucks speeding the other way. He lodges with other drivers and is befriended by Gino, an Italian in love with Lucy, Cartley's secretary. Red, the foreman and head driver, offers a gold cigarette case to any man who beats his runs in a day. Tom is set on trying, and Red keeps his lead by a shortcut no other driver will take.
