Plot summary
American reporter Sara Scott is in London during the last year of World War II, where she begins an affair with British correspondent Mark Trevor. She is torn between marrying her wealthy American boss, Carter Reynolds, and staying with Mark. She chooses Mark, then learns he is married and has a son. They separate for a time, then agree to work things out. When Mark is killed in action, Sara fears a nervous breakdown. Instead of returning to New York, she travels to Cornwall to mourn with his family, keeping the affair secret.

- During filming in Britain, gangster Johnny Stompanato, then Lana Turner's boyfriend, confronted Sean Connery on set with a gun, suspecting an affair with Turner. Connery grabbed the gun from him and twisted his wrist, and Stompanato ran off the set.
- Paramount had planned to release the film in September 1958 but rushed its post-production to capitalize on publicity from the killing of Johnny Stompanato by Lana Turner's daughter Cheryl Crane on 4 April 1958. The film opened in the United States on 2 May 1958, less than a month after his death.
- After Johnny Stompanato's death, a rumor spread that a Los Angeles mobster held Sean Connery responsible, and Connery, then in Los Angeles making Darby O'Gill and the Little People for Walt Disney, looked over his shoulder nervously for a time.
- The Cornwall fishing village called St Giles in the film, which Lana Turner's character visits, was shot at Polperro, and the railway station she arrives at, also called St Giles, is actually Looe railway station.
- The film was the first feature from actress Lana Turner's production company, Lanturn Productions, which co-produced it with the British company Kaydor Productions Ltd.
