Alan King
Biography
Alan King was an American comedian and actor known for his biting, angry rants about everyday life. Born in Brooklyn on December 26, 1927, he began performing as a teenager on Major Bowes Amateur Hour and then worked the Catskills hotel circuit. Tony Martin helped him get his first film part in Hit the Deck, and he took small movie roles in the 1950s. Television guest spots on The Ed Sullivan Show, Perry Como's program, and The Garry Moore Show brought wider fame, and he became a frequent guest host for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, hosting the Oscars in 1972. He often worked with Sidney Lumet, appearing in The Anderson Tapes (1971) and starring in Just Tell Me What You Want (1980). His film roles included I, the Jury (1982), Cat's Eye (1985), Memories of Me (1988), and Casino (1995). He acted on stage as Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls and hosted New York Friars Club roasts.

King's comedy style shifted after he watched Danny Thomas in the early 1950s, moving him from one-liners to a conversational style drawn from everyday life.
