Plot summary
In Los Angeles, a set of love stories unfolds in parallel. Paul produces the television cooking show of his wife Hannah, and the two are preparing to renew their vows at a party for their fortieth anniversary, though Hannah wants him to speak plainly about a woman whose photograph sits on his desk. Meredith, a theater director who has been hurt before, keeps the architect Trent at a distance. At a club, Joan, fresh from a loud breakup, flirts with Keenan, who tells her he does not date. Gracie meets her lover Roger in hotel rooms but refuses to let the affair become more than that, while Hugh, in a marriage that has gone stale, approaches women in bars with invented tragedies. Mark, gravely ill with AIDS, is joined by his mother Mildred, from whom he had grown apart.
