Plot summary
Kinjanja is an African nation that has been independent of Britain for only a short time. Morgan Leafy, who works as secretary to the British High Commissioner there, gives his attention to drink and to women, among them Hazel, with whom he is having an affair. His new boss, Arthur Fanshawe, would like to leave Africa until he learns that the country sits on a huge oil reserve, and he wants Morgan to bring a powerful local man into a deal with Britain. When lightning strikes a woman on the British compound, the Kinjanja government turns hostile. Sam Adekunle, who is running for president, accepts an invitation to London and then asks Morgan to sway a prominent doctor who opposes a plan that would make Adekunle rich.
