Plot summary
Rhoda waits tables in Greenwich Village while her husband, the poet Samson Shillitoe, works at the long poem he cannot finish. His temper and spirits have gone bad, a debt collector keeps after him for alimony owed to a former wife, and after he strikes a police detective, other troubles follow: he loses a job cleaning offices, and a paid reading of his work to a women's group collapses. Rhoda fears that if the poem stays unfinished he may harm himself, so without telling him she gives the two hundred dollars he earned to Dr. Oliver West, a psychiatrist who claims he can cure writer's block, and asks him to treat Samson. West, intrigued by the poet, agrees and arranges a stay at a sanitarium upstate.

- Sean Connery wanted the role of the poet Samson Shillitoe from the moment Jerome Hellman bought the rights, but was tied up with other commitments; Hellman flew to the Bahamas to meet him while he was filming Thunderball, and Connery was finally cast in June 1965.
- While A Fine Madness was shooting in the Murray Hill section of Manhattan, Jerome Hellman invited Japanese director Akira Kurosawa to New York to watch the filming, and Kurosawa also scouted locations in the area for a future film.
