Plot summary
Robert Dapes, a former British major who now works as a mercenary, arrives in Cuba under General Bello's orders, attached to Fulgencio Batista's forces. His assignment is to train the Cuban army against Fidel Castro's guerrillas. He has barely started when he runs into Alexandra Lopez de Pulido, an old flame he keeps pursuing. She is married to Juan Pulido, a selfish plantation owner, and manages his rum and cigar factory. Her husband expects her to join him for drinks with a man who may invest in the factory. Cuba's leaders live in tremendous wealth and mostly American tourists spend freely, while many Cubans live in poverty-stricken slums.
