Plot summary
Horace Pope is brought to court for peddling goods in the street. In mitigation he says he works the black market only while he waits to enlist. The magistrate calls his bluff, and Pope is signed up. He joins the RAF, where he makes friends with Pedlar Pascoe, a good-hearted gypsy who happily goes along with his schemes. The pair take money for leave passes and arrange postings close to home, and both mean to make a bit on the side. Avoiding the front lines is what they are after. Their scams land them in trouble wherever they are posted.

- This was Sean Connery's tenth film and his first lead role, released the year before his big breakthrough as James Bond in the 1962 film Dr No.
- During a 1961 trip to England Alan King made a brief appearance in the film and forgot all about it until the American release gave him second billing. He and Connery would work together again on The Anderson Tapes in 1971.
