Plot summary
At a Benedictine abbey in Northern Italy in the early 14th century, a young illuminator appears to have killed himself, and the monks take the death as a sign that the end of days is at hand. William of Baskerville, a Franciscan friar, and his novice, Adso of Melk, arrive ahead of a theological conference to be held there, and the worried Abbot allows William to investigate. Over the days that follow, other monks die in strange ways. William and Adso cross paths with Salvatore, a hunchback who mixes many tongues in his speech, and with Remigio da Varagine, his protector. From Salvatore's use of the word penitenziagite, William takes him to have once belonged to a heretical sect.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Annaud resisted suggestions to cast Sean Connery as William, feeling the character, already an amalgam of Sherlock Holmes and William of Occam, would become too overwhelming with "007" added, and relented only after failing to find another actor he liked.
- Eco was dismayed by the casting choice, and Columbia Pictures pulled out of the film because Connery's career was then in a slump.
- For a wordless seduction scene, director Annaud let co-star Valentina Vargas lead without his direction and deliberately kept teenage actor Christian Slater in the dark about what she would do, to capture a more genuine reaction from him.
- The abbey's exterior was not a real building but a full-scale replica constructed on a hilltop outside Rome, the biggest outdoor set built in Europe since Cleopatra in 1963.
