Biography

Hugh Bonneville is a British actor who began on stage, joining the National Theatre in 1987 and the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1991. His film debut came in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein in 1994, and his early roles were often good-natured, bumbling men such as Bernie in Notting Hill (1999) and Mr Rushworth in Mansfield Park (1999). Playing the young John Bayley in Iris (2001) brought him a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He is best known as the Earl of Grantham in Downton Abbey, the period drama he appeared in from 2010 to 2015, a part that earned him a Golden Globe nomination and two Emmy nominations and that he reprised in the films Downton Abbey (2019), Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022) and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (2025). He also played Mr Brown in Paddington (2014) and Paddington 2 (2017) and Ian Fletcher in Twenty Twelve and W1A.
