Plot summary
Eugenia Crocker and Nesta Pett are wealthy American sisters who dislike each other and compete over everything. In London, Eugenia hopes to buy a royal title, and Nesta wants her niece by marriage, the poetess turned crime novelist Ann Chester, to marry Lord Reginald Wisbeach. Ann does not love him. Eugenia's plans keep stumbling over her stepson, James Crocker, called Piccadilly Jim after the gossip column that got him fired, and known as a gambler, brawler and drinker. Jim decides to become respectable just as he meets Ann and falls for her on sight. Ann dislikes Piccadilly Jim, whose column once criticized her book of love poems. Since Ann wants a man with an adventurous streak, Jim courts her under a borrowed name.
