Plot summary

Maurice is a streetwise ginger cat who travels with a band of self-taught talking rats and with Keith, the pied piper. Maurice warns a town that rats have arrived, the townsfolk pay Keith to lead the rodents away, and the rats, who can read and speak, play along. Their next stop is Bad Blintz, a town short of food where the rat-catchers have found no answer to the vanishing supplies. The rats go into the tunnels beneath the town, and a trap catches Darktan, their leader. Maurice slips into the mayor's house, and there he and Keith meet Malicia, the mayor's daughter, who reads books and takes a keen interest in the rats; the travelers' scheme runs into trouble.
