Plot summary
In 1927, a letter from Buckingham Palace tells the Crawleys that King George V and Queen Mary will visit Downton Abbey on their tour of Yorkshire. The family and the servants prepare for the royal stay. Lady Mary decides that butler Barrow cannot handle an occasion of this size and asks the retired Mr Carson to return. The King and Queen's staff arrive ahead of their employers and take charge of the house, treating the Downton servants as outsiders, and small items begin to vanish from the rooms. Violet, the Dowager Countess, resents the Queen's lady-in-waiting, Maud Bagshaw, whose estate is to pass to Lucy Smith rather than to Robert. In the village, Tom Branson meets a man who introduces himself as Major Chetwode.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Downton Abbey (2019)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film's plot is based on a real royal visit by King George V and Queen Mary to Wentworth Woodhouse in South Yorkshire in 1912, staged to show the importance of the monarchy. The estate itself was used as a shooting location because of that link.
- Geraldine James' costume as Queen Mary was built using material from one of the real Queen Mary's actual dresses. The London costume company COSPROP, which worked on the film, owns some of the Queen's real wardrobe and studied its construction details.
- Scenes set in York were shot at Beamish Museum using its working trams, and the heritage railway scenes were filmed on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, where the Pickering terminus stood in for King's Cross.
- Lily James, who played Lady Rose MacClare in the series, said she would not return for the film, and Ed Speleers, who played footman Jimmy Kent, also declined to reprise his part.
- After taking $13.8 million on its first day, the film debuted to $31 million, topping the box office and setting the largest opening weekend in Focus Features' history.
- Maggie Smith's tiara in the ball scene was a 19th-century platinum piece from Bentley & Skinner of Piccadilly holding 16.5 carats of diamonds, while her ball gown was found in a Paris vintage shop and dyed from turquoise to lilac.
