Plot summary
James is 29 and terminally ill with cancer, and he wants some of his remaining time spent out walking. His three closest friends agree to go with him to Barafundle Bay on the Pembrokeshire coast. Davy has been out of work for a long while and has been helping James's family care for him. Bill is loud and fun, and his friends keep hoping he will finally break up with his girlfriend. Miles, an intellectual who went into business, has stayed away lately; he and James were once inseparable and always a little competitive, especially about writing. James is too weak to walk far now, so he travels in a cart and needs his friends to help him physically and to give him morphine for the pain.
