Plot summary
In 1958, Robin Cavendish and his wife Diana are in Kenya, where Robin falls ill with polio at twenty-eight. The disease leaves him paralyzed from the neck down and dependent on a respirator to breathe, and doctors give him three months to live. He is flown back to Britain, where he lies in a hospital ward, depressed, refusing visits from Diana and their newborn son, Jonathan, and asking to be taken off life support. Diana keeps coming anyway, and his spirits slowly lift. When she works out how to manage his daily care herself, she proposes moving him and the respirator home. The hospital consultant, Dr. Entwistle, warns that Robin cannot survive two minutes without the ventilator, and other doctors and nurses help with the move.
