Plot summary
Chloe Crumb, twelve, rides the bus to her school in Hemel Hempstead. Her school nemesis, Pippa, throws a banana skin at Mr. Stink, a homeless man with his dog, Duchess. Chloe apologizes and offers him five pounds, but he asks for sausages for Duchess, which she brings the next morning. Her mother, Caroline, is running for local MP and tears up a story Chloe wrote, saying homeless people should be driven out of town. Chloe offers Mr. Stink a place to sleep in the garden shed, and he agrees to one night.
