Plot summary
Near the end of World War II, Tolly travels by train from Manchester to spend Christmas at Green Knowe, the Cambridgeshire estate of his grandmother, Mrs. Oldknow. His father David is missing in action, and his mother has gone to London to wait for information. Mrs. Oldknow, who once wrote a harsh letter about her son's marriage, is short of money and may have to sell the house. She tells Tolly about Mariah van Raymer, whose gambling nearly ruined the family in the 1800s. On his first night Tolly hears a ghostly girl, Susan, Lord Thomas Oldknow's blind daughter. He discovers that he can move between his own time and the early nineteenth century, where some people see and speak with him and others do not. Susan can talk with him in both.
