Plot summary
In 1943, with the Allies pushing the Axis out of Italy, Frank Stokes tells President Roosevelt that victory would mean little for a world that had lost the art of the West. He is told to put together an Army unit of art specialists, including curators, museum directors and an architect. Their task is to help Allied troops track down stolen works and return them to the people they belong to. By the summer of 1944 the Allies have landed in France, where the curator Claire Simone is made to help the German officer Viktor Stahl take art for Adolf Hitler's planned museum. Allied officers will not risk their troops for Stokes's mission, so his men split up to cover more ground.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- In 1945 a British Special Operations Executive mission codenamed Bonzos, led by Albrecht Gaiswinkler, was responsible for saving the looted art stored in Austrian salt mines. Parachuted into the Aussee area, Gaiswinkler raised a force of around 300 men and armed them with captured German weapons.
SPOILER
The real organization was never a big one, a few dozen officers at most, but the film reduces it to seven men to personalise the hunt: five Americans, one British officer, the first to be killed off, played by Hugh Bonneville, and a Free French officer.
