Plot summary
Stella Raphael is the wife of Max, a psychiatrist at a remote mental asylum, and the mother of their son, Charlie. Stella is bored and unfulfilled. She becomes curious about Edgar Stark, one of the hospital's patients, a man convicted of gruesomely murdering his wife in a jealous rage and disfiguring her. Edgar is considered particularly dangerous, but his violent past does not deter Stella. She begins a passionate affair with him, beguiled by his passion, and the affair intensifies. Max, her husband, suspects nothing. Dr. Peter Cleave, another doctor at the asylum, is himself fixated on Stella.
