Plot summary
In industrial England, Jeronicus Jangle invents and sells toys at his shop, Jangles and Things. A new component lets his toys come to life, beginning with a matador doll called Don Juan Diego. When Diego learns he is to be mass-produced, he pushes Gustafson, Jeronicus's apprentice, to take the doll and the book of inventions. With no proof to give the police, the shop slides into hardship, and Gustafson builds a factory from the stolen designs. Jeronicus loses his wife Joanne and grows distant from his daughter Jessica, who moves away. Thirty years on, the shop is a failing pawnbroker business, postwoman Ms. Johnston tries to lift his spirits, and banker Mr. Delacroix demands payment. Jessica sends her daughter Journey to stay with him until Christmas.
