Plot summary
Tom Branson, the widowed son-in-law of the Earl of Grantham, marries Lucy Smith, the heir of Lady Maud Bagshaw. Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess, then reveals that the late Marquis de Montmirail gave her a villa in the south of France, and she intends it for her great-granddaughter Sybbie. When a production company asks to shoot a silent film at Downton, Robert Crawley refuses, but Lady Mary, who manages the estate, accepts the fee to replace a leaking roof, and stays behind to oversee the crew while the rest of the family travels. The new Marquis de Montmirail invites them to the villa, though his mother disputes Violet's ownership. Violet is too ill to make the journey. Cora, Edith and Bertie Pelham, Tom and Lucy, and Lady Bagshaw go, with Carson, Bates and Baxter.

- For all its Englishness, Downton Abbey: A New Era was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at China's 35th Golden Rooster Awards in 2022, where it lost to the Serbian film Father.
- The film opened in the United Kingdom on 746 cinemas, the second-widest release of all time there, behind only the 2021 rollout of No Time to Die, and took $3.8 million in that market.
- Nearly half of the opening weekend audience, 48 per cent, was over the age of 55, and Deadline Hollywood said it "repped the first time [exhibitors] saw older patrons since pre-pandemic".
- The film's large second-weekend drop was attributed in part to the arrival of Top Gun: Maverick, whose audience was 55 per cent over the age of 35 and so shared much of the same demographic as A New Era.
