Plot summary
At 23, Tracy 'Tre' Stokes rides a bike for the Los Angeles Police Department and dreams of becoming a detective like his late father. Captain Victor Delgado, his mentor, thinks his reckless streak makes him unfit. When a student dies at a party, the mayor's office wants an undercover officer placed at the elite Westbury School, and Tre volunteers. Delgado gives him a chance. His assignment is Rob Donovan, a Westbury student whose name was found on a note at the crime scene. Tre tries to befriend him on the basketball court after school and hears about the Blacktop Battle, a local tournament Rob is captaining for Westbury. Westbury is losing to its crosstown rival when Tre joins the game.
