Plot summary

Jane Austen accepts a proposal of marriage in 1802, then changes her mind by the following morning. Twelve years later she and her sister Cassandra go to the wedding of their niece Anna Austen, who marries Benjamin Lefroy. Jane goes home with another niece, Fanny Knight, and her brother Edward Austen-Knight. Fanny, who calls Jane her favorite aunt, introduces her to a potential suitor, Mr. Plumptre, and asks why her aunt never married. Jane, who says she has no experience of that kind of love, holds that everyone should be free to marry once for love. Fanny's uncle, the Reverend Brook Bridges, arrives worried about Jane's influence over the girl.
